St Croix grasps lure rod innovation

US brand St Croix has developed a range of rods specifically designed for the big baits that musky and bass hunters have switched onto, boasting an update to its innovative GRASP reel seat – the GRASP II.

Leaning into a heritage of designing musky rod lengths, powers and actions that excel in presenting lures up to 24oz, creating bass rods that exceed the expectations of anglers wishing to fish swim baits up to or exceeding 8oz has been the next challenge for St Croix rod designers.

The physical demands on anglers engaged in chucking and winding such behemoth, water-resistant baits over extended periods are high but the GRASP reel seat came to their aid in 2023, promoting wrist-to-forearm alignment throughout the casting, retrieving and fish-fighting phases.

Now that reduction in both angler fatigue and the potential for injury has been boosted further with GRASP II, which brings the extended benefits of angler adaptability.

Standard on all Mojo Musky and Legend Tournament Musky series rods, as well as select swimbait rods in the Mojo Bass and Legend Tournament Bass series, GRASP II is said to deliver unprecedented angler choice.

Anglers can easily change between the included GRASP pistol grip, standard palming trigger, or flat, depending on angler preference, or the specific lure or presentation at hand. No tools required. Every GRASP II rod comes with a handy pouch for secured storage of all pieces.

Musky expert Jeremy Smith of Angling Edge said: “St Croix has been at the forefront of musky-rod development, and the new GRASP II handle gives musky anglers additional choices in how they can set up their rods based on lure and presentation variables, as well as personal preference.

“They can enjoy the benefits of the GRASP trigger when they want, then quickly swap to a standard palming trigger in other situations, or even the flat insert for rod-holder techniques like trolling and live-sucker presentations.

“It’s an incredibly well-engineered and executed solution that puts every individual angler in control of the way they want to fish.”
