MUSTAD: STILL FORGING AHEAD
Mustad has been advancing the boundaries of hook design and manufacture for 140 years and is still forging ahead with new production, research and development. TTW looks at two new breakthrough pieces of design.
Every year since 1877, more and more anglers worldwide have looked to Mustad hooks to catch their fish of a lifetime. Some 140 years ago, the era of modern hook production began when Mustad engineer Mathias Topp invented the first automated hook-making machine. It continues to this day in a never-ending quest to provide the finest fish hooks on the planet.
Mustad has unveiled two significant advancements in fish-hook production. Firstly, it has disclosed its MTL-V1 point design. This is a new, more efficient point design that is combined with a new sharpening process to enhance the quality of its great value Classic Hook range. The result is a sharper, sleeker point shape with penetration resistance 20 per cent lower than standard Classic Hook points. This means that anglers will now see quicker and more positive hook-sets on all of their favourite value-priced Mustad Classic styles, including O’Shaughnessy, Carlisle, Aberdeen and Sproat bend hooks.
In another breakthrough piece of design research, Mustad’s engineers have developed new construction technology in double and treble hook production. New materials have been developed and are being used to weld hooks together, resulting in smoother and more corrosion-resistant brazing seams. These improvements further enhance the legendary strength and durability of Mustad’s double and treble hook ranges.
The most advanced technologies come together to produce Mustad hooks. Its enduring reputation for lightweight hooks with legendary consistency and strength – up to 30 per cent stronger than standard wire – is no coincidence.
Mustad is the only hook company in the world that owns and operates its own wire milling facility, which has been in continuous operation in Norway since 1832. Mustad’s proprietary wire is painstakingly processed with steel alloy specifically formulated for fish-hook production, and custom milled using experience and technology developed over nearly two centuries. This vertically integrated process is unique. Owning the wire production process makes it possible to produce the highest possible quality, and means Mustad is the only hook manufacturer controlling all phases of production from wire to finish.
