Extricator gets the best from the past
Wychwood Carp is very much a true all-round brand, offering hardware and consumables in many forms, and this year’s iceTackle* event, held at its Milton Keynes HQ, saw a new reel launched that will further enhance its portfolio.
The Extricator FD5000 is a ‘baby pit’ reel, as the guys at Wychwood call it. Basically, that means it’s a smaller form factor that’s perfectly suited to shorter rods, stalking and boat fishing situations, or just for anglers who want a reel that isn’t bulky with an excessive line capacity.
Aside from its size, the most notable factor is its construction from magnesium. This strong yet lightweight material is often reserved for much higher-priced reels, so it’s refreshing to know that this is a sub-£90 product that falls very much into the budget of the masses.
Winding power is 4.8:1, so well suited to dealing with big fish and big leads, and the ‘retro inspired’ looks – matt black, silver aluminium spool and wooden handle, put this very much on-trend.
The FD5000 is part of the wider Extricator range, which is one of Wychwood’s most popular, as brand manager Martin Tracey explained when we caught up with him. “Extricator was originally set up as a range of stalking rods for the UK, but thanks to their short handles and powerful through-action blanks, they’ve become a bestseller in Europe for anglers fishing from boats. We do heavily advertise them here in the UK through the warmer months, but in Europe they continue to sell all through the year thanks to great margins for dealers.
“We’ve assessed the range’s potential and aside from additional rods that will be coming later this year, the FD5000 reel was the perfect complementary product because of its size and relatively accessible price tag. Next year will see more products coming under the Extricator brand name, so it’s exciting times for us.”
The Exctricator range
In addition to the FD5000 reel, the Extricator range also feature a trio of rods: a one-piece stalking rod for close-quarter fishing, plus a 9ft (2.75lb) and 10ft version (3lb). These longer rods are perfect for general fishing where traditional long carp rods of 12ft aren’t required. All three are available in either Duplon or cork-handle options.
